Heating Efficiency Working Group – Update
Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall
October 2011

The Heating Efficiency group has met several times in the last 6 months in order review and make recommendations on the future improvements to the halls heating, insulation and energy usage with the aim of putting in place a plan to reduce the halls long terms costs and improve energy efficiency.
Actions undertaken so far
·
Sustainable Energy Options Report was compiled by TV Energy. They analysed our energy usage and made some recommendations for further research into different technologies. In addition we also fitted an electricity monitor to the hall for 2 months to fully understand daily usage.
·
Cavity Wall insulation was installed in the whole hall and new double glazed windows in the Main hall & the air duct for heating return insulated. This was paid for with grants plus dipping into the hall contingency funds.
·
Initial research has been undertaken to find potential grant funding sources for the project.
Short and Long term Aims & Recommendations
·
Insulation - Priority should be given to fund raising in order to insulate the hall properly. Cost for completing this range from £25,000 to £40,000. The major cost being insulation of the vaulted ceilings in both halls. Different methods are being researched to find the most cost effective solution.
·
Solar P.V. – We believe that the fitting of a solar P.V. array as soon as possible is still going to be a good investment. This is in spite of the recent changes to the feed in tariff  that the  Government has made.  This could be done via a company offering us free electricity (£750 per year) in return for them fitting solar panels for free. If a grant was made available to cover the installation cost (circa £10,000) then we could also keep the Subsidy money however time is very short so we recommend at the very least going ahead with option 1 immediately.
·
New Heating System – More detailed research is needed to look into what the possible options are for a renewable heating system (either ground-source, air-source or Bio Mass) and the advantages against staying with Oil & Gas. The government will also start a subsidy scheme for some of these technologies so we also need to keep this in mind when recommending a system.
